Pup Cinnamon Buns

I've been baking for Pierre and all the dogs that visit The Boulevard Market this week, and this recipe is super cute and Pierre loves them!  It's a baked Cinnamon Bun for dogs.

Pierre likes a softer treat, so these were super fun and easy and stayed a little soft after baking.  This yields about 24 small-ish treats.  While the photo shows the entire batch of dough rolled out into one rectangle, half way through, I cut the rectangle in half length-wise or the buns would have been huge.  Great for a big dog, but WAY too much for my terrier!  My rolls ended up measuring abut 2 inches across.  These were super easy and fun to make!  You will want to refrigerate them for up to 3 weeks, or toss them in the freezer for up to 3 months.

PUP CINNAMON BUNS

1/2 cup cornmeal
2 cups whole wheat flour
2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
2/3 cup chicken stock
1/3 cup plain yogurt

FILLING:

1 tablespoon brown sugar
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 egg, separated

Stir filling ingredients to combine.  Beat the reserved egg white and set aside.

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Mix all ingredients in a large bowl until combined.  Knead until a soft, shiny dough forms, picking up all bits of flour, about 3 minutes.  Divide dough in half.

Roll dough out 1/3 inch thick, on a parchment paper into a square about 6X6.  Spread with filling and roll up into a log.  Cut log into 1/2-3/4 inch thick slices and lay them flat on a parchment lined baking sheet.  Repeat with other half of dough.  Brush rolls with beaten egg white and bake for 30 minutes.

You could add a drizzle of frosting, yogurt or leave shiny and plain!

Homemade Frosty Paws Recipe

I was so excited last week to receive this recipe from Patti, a friend and fellow dog lover!

My sidekick, Pierre, loves the Frosty Paws treats from the freezer section of the grocery store.  However, at 11.9 pounds (12 #s would be overweight) I'm stuck splitting the cup in half or taking it away midway through the enjoyment...downright mean in everyone's opinion.

I purchased some small silicone baking cups at the local dollar store and they are perfect!  The baking cups are also non-stick, dishwasher safe and colorful!  I got 8 cups for $1.

Knock off Frosty Paws; Peanut Butter Flavor
32 oz vanilla yogurt
1 large jar baby bananas or 1 ripe banana mashed
4 TBSP Peanut butter

I did a little whirl in the food processor with the banana and yogurt.

The original recipe called for honey, but since I used the vanilla yogurt, I omitted it.  The vanilla yogurt is a bit sweetened and tasted great.  I also didn't mix in the peanut butter entirely, but made a little swirl in the yogurt, kinda like people ice cream.

Here is my sidekick in action....

Bring on the Spring and ice cream season, we're ready!

Doggie Treats!

Ahhh, a day off!  With nothing more important to do than relax!  These days are freedom, they are dreaming days, planning, renewing, napping, baking and enjoying days!  Today I made a new recipe...tiny treats for Pierre and bigger treats for his friends!  This is new territory for me...baking for a dog?  Why not?  It took about 30 minutes including the baking time and Pierre is one happy terrier!!  I couldn't believe the amount of doggie treat recipes available on the internet!  The one I'm sharing was posted by many people, so I won't attribute to anyone, but I did add some grated cheese (surprise right?) to the original recipe, about 3/4 of a cup of cheddar that was a bit past it's prime.

I had everything I needed on hand!

Waiting patiently by oven for treats to be finished!

We are learning the in's and out's of dog care.  Ye-gads, I had to post a poison list on the fridge!  I'm hoping the Sunday trip to The Boulevard Market had no lasting effects, as Pierre found and promptly ate a piece of Pannetone with raisins, a few stray coffee beans as well as many crumbs of cheese and salame, 2 toothpicks and some artificial greenery.  Yes, I technically stopped in to work...that did not happen.  But who can work with all that cuteness staring at you?

Happy Day Doggie Treats
  • 2 cups whole wheat flour (you can use another type of flour if your dog is sensitive to wheat)
  • 1 cup rolled oats
  • 1/3 cup peanut butter, chunky or smooth (I used smooth this time)
  • 1 1/4 cups hot water
Preheat oven to 350 degrees and grease baking sheets.

Mix all ingredients together until combined.  Turn out onto floured surface and roll to 1/4 inch thickness.  Cut out shapes (dog bone maybe?) and bake for about 20 minutes until browned and crunchy.  I cut ours into small bites...but if you do larger biscuits (cookie size), you will need to add 8 minutes to baking time.  I added the cheese right before rolling out and brushed mine with an egg wash to make them a bit shiny.

Hope you enjoy your next day off with a doggie too!
